The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) York and South Simcoe is a branch of CMHA National and works to promote mental health for all and assist with the recovery of those living with mental illness and addiction. CMHA works toward this mission by providing education and resources about mental health, and offers a range of supports and services. CMHA York and South Simcoe serves York Region and South Simcoe County through several locations in these areas.
CMHA recognizes that mental health is something that affects us all, and it is important to educate people on the importance of taking care of their mental health and destigmatizing mental illness. One in three people in Canada will experience mental health problems or illness.
CMHA York and South Simcoe locations, their website, as well as a province-wide information telephone line, provide information and resources on mental health and mental illness. They also offer workshops and courses on topics related to mental health, such as suicide prevention, mental health at work, as well as targeted workshops about mental health for teens, youth and seniors, to name just a few. (For more information about these workshops, and to register, check out the Workshops and Courses page of the CMHA York and South Simcoe website.)
In addition to educational resources and workshops, CMHA York and South Simcoe offers a variety of programming to assist clients and family members. Programs range from acute community based care, homelessness and housing supports, psycho-social rehabilitation including employment and a variety of individual, group therapy and workshops. One notable offering is Bounce Back, a free telephone based supported cognitive behavioural therapy service for those experiencing mild to moderate depression and anxiety. As 71% of adults first experience symptoms as youth and young adults, CMHA has a wide variety of youth wellness and treatment services offered in community or in partnerships with local school boards. A commitment to early access to care is vital to promote better outcomes and better health.
CMHA is a volunteer driven organization. Volunteers engage in many aspects of service including facilitation of groups, workshops, administrative help and supporting special events and fundraising. Volunteers sit on CMHA’s board, support committee members, and are the trusted voices to improve quality as Client and Family Advisors. There is always a range of volunteer opportunities are currently available.
