New normal – same commitments

April 9th, 2020 by Iler Campbell

Most of us at Iler Campbell LLP are completing our fourth week of working from home.  We are pleased and proud to have found new ways to support our clients’ legal needs and to communicate among ourselves.  We are grateful for the patience you have shown us as we become familiar with new technologies, work in spaces that were designed for other purposes, and for some, grapple with the now increased demands of our home lives.

We know that you are all doing the same.   We’re all saying it – this is a marathon, not a sprint.

  1. Communication methods

One of the primary commitments by lawyers to their clients is to keep information confidential.  Rest assured, this commitment is driving our at-home work too.

Communicating via new technology brings with it certain security risks.   We have made a decision at the firm not to use the platform that seems most popular – Zoom – for client related communications.  Its ease of use and video quality is good, but as you may have heard in the media, it’s been plagued by security problems – from random people joining in progress meetings because meeting IDs are guessable and recordings of private meetings appearing online without consent.

If we are meeting with you, we will find other ways to communicate that are more secure.

  1. Up to date information

Another commitment lawyers make is to maintain current knowledge about the law.  Laws are changing daily now as new programs roll-out federally and provincially to reflect the new realities.   We are doing our best to stay on top of them and to communicate them to you.  If you learn of things that you’d like to understand better, please drop us a line and we’ll do our best to include them in our e-blasts and on our blog.

  1. Timely but careful legal advice

The biggest commitment of all is to provide careful and considered legal advice.  At a time when clients need to make decisions quickly, we know our job is to move just as quickly to respond to your legal questions.  We’re here for you doing the very best to meet your needs.

We wish you all a safe holiday weekend.
