Video of Celia Chandler’s workshop, Human Rights & Housing in – An Overview, is now online!

If you like, you can also download a copy of the slides here.

At Iler Campbell LLP, we are regularly asked to provide advice on a wide range of human rights and housing issues including: dogs in pet‑free co‑ops; whether a medical note provides enough detail; and if behaviour can justify eviction if it relates to a mental health disability.

In this webinar, Celia Chandler gives an overview of how the Ontario Human Rights Code applies in housing. The goal for the session – to give you better tools to know whether you’ve got an issue that’s worth a call to your lawyer.

Video: “Cannabis legalization and policy implementation: what’s next?”

October 18th, 2019 by Iler Campbell

A recording of lawyer Michael Hackl’s presentation on cannabis and housing is now online. You can download a copy of the slideshow here. Workshop description below:

It has now been about a year since recreational cannabis was legalized. Some of the questions and concerns raised by housing providers leading up to that change were hard to answer as there was not yet any guidance from courts or tribunals as to how they would deal with such situations. While there are still issues that have not yet been tested before a court or tribunal, we do know more than we did a year ago. This session discusses some of the developments that have taken place since the legalization of cannabis, how some housing providers are dealing with questions, and what the past year of legalized cannabis means for housing providers moving forward.

Video: Community Land Trusts – everything you’ve wanted to know

August 9th, 2019 by Iler Campbell

Community land trusts – What do they do? How are they formed? How can you find out more about this type of organization to try to start one in your own community?

A video of Iler Campbell lawyer, Claudia Pedrero’s webinar on the topic is now online. In the webinar, Claudia goes over the community land trust model, and how this form of organization can, and is, being used as a grass-roots model for community stewardship of land and community assets. Drawing on her work both as a lawyer and a board member of a Toronto community land trust, she explains how community land trusts differ from non-profit organizations, and how community land trusts are presenting themselves as an alternative form of land ownership and management.

Video: Employment Standards Act – Amendments in 2018 and 2019 and what they mean for you

May 16th, 2019 by Iler Campbell

In 2018, the Ford Government passed Bill 47, the “Making Ontario Open for Businesses Act”. This bill reverses a number of changes made to employment standards legislation by the Liberal government, including the provision around annual increases to minimum wage. In addition to providing a summary of key amendments to the Employment Standards Act, we will also touch on Bill 66, the “Act to Restore Ontario’s Competitiveness”, which was passed on April 3, 2019 and makes further changes to employment legislation in Ontario.

Iler Campbell lawyer, Safia Lakhani, led a workshop on these changes on May 15. A recording of it is now online. Check it out below. You can download a copy of her slideshow here and handout here.

Webinar recording and slides: Good practices for using the internet and social media to promote your organization

March 13th, 2019 by Iler Campbell

Does your organization have a Twitter, Facebook or Instagram account, or any other social media accounts? Does it have a website, or a blog? Does it have any sort of internal network linking members or stakeholders? These tools can be powerful ways to get out information; they can reach far more people than the old fashioned newsletter or bulletin board. However, there are risks to having tools to get information out to more people, more quickly – when the information is defamatory or discriminatory, or otherwise problematic, having it distributed on line can create serious problems.

Iler Campbell lawyer, Shelina Ali discussed these issues in a webinar last Friday. A recording of it is now online. Check it out below. You can download a copy of her slideshow here.
