We are living in very unusual times. While we have adopted a physical distancing policy with many of us working from our home offices, we are very much up and running, ready to serve client needs.

In the last few days, we have been asked a variety of questions that, frankly, are new to us. We know that you are struggling with them too. This article attempts to highlight some of the issues that you may already have faced or may be facing tomorrow. Remember, if or when these issues arise, we are here for you.

By now, many of our clients will have had the opportunity to work with our articling student, Karly Wilson. Karly started with us in July and her articling term runs until May next year. Readers of our blog may also recognize her name as the author of our August article on prison reform. We’ll let Karly introduce herself in her own words:

I’ve always wanted to help people, and my ability to do so with just an English degree was a bit limited, so I went to law school.

Fall Event Roundup

While the warm weather makes it hard to believe we’re into fall, we are certainly into the full swing of fall activity.

In September, we were pleased to attend two 25^th anniversary parties for housing co‑ops – one in Whitby and another in Pickering. So great to see co‑ops do what they do best – celebrate strong, inclusive community.

In late September, we also delivered an IC Education workshop for housing co‑ops. We were delighted to have Alterna Savings and Credit Union sponsor the event, allowing co‑ops to attend for free. Thanks to the Central Ontario Co‑operative Housing Federation (COCHF) for co‑organising this with us. Although it was held at a co‑op in Waterloo and many attendees were from COCHF co‑ops, we were delighted to have people attend from Sudbury, North Bay, Toronto, Peel Region and the Niagara Peninsula. If you have ideas about in‑person training and have the space to accommodate it, please be in touch. If we can find a way to deliver training in a way that is cost‑effective for you, we will.

ONPHA has its annual conference, themed “Owning our Future”, on Nov 1‑3 in Toronto. Iler Campbell lawyers are honoured to be on the program a few times: on Friday, Nov 1, Safia Lakhani will help housing providers understand their current obligations to their employees; and Celia Chandler will be part of a panel discussing medical assistance in death and how that relates to housing. On Saturday, Nov 2, Michael Hackl will pair up with another housing lawyer to discuss cannabis in housing; and Celia will return to the conference to offer thoughts on Building Successful Tenancies and Strong Communities with two community mediators.

Spring event roundup

It’s been a long, snowy winter and we’re more than ready to emerge again to engage with our clients and others in the sector. Please check us out at these spring events!

On March 18, 2019, Celia Chandler will deliver a human rights workshop to a group of housing co‑ops in Niagara Region.
On March 22, 2019, Brian Iler will talk about co‑housing to lawyers at the Ontario Bar Association’s session called Future of Independent Living for Older Adults: Real Estate and Elder Law Considerations.
The Housing Services Corporation’s Regeneration Forum is held this year on March 25 and 26. We are pleased to advertise in its program. Shelina Ali will attend on behalf of the firm.
Safia Lakhani and articling student, Brynn Leger, are conducting two tenants’ rights workshops – one on March 27 and the second on April 18 – for a settlement organization through the Ontario Bar Association’s Speakers’ Bureau.
Celia Chandler is taking a vacation to the west coast in a couple of weeks but will stop in at the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association Congress in Victoria on April 3 where she will promote Iler Campbell LLP at the trade show.
On April 6, Safia will give a talk on cannabis to housing co‑ops at the Central Ontario Co‑operative Housing Federation event in Guelph.
The following weekend, April 13, Michael Hackl will discuss working with unionized staff at CHFT’s Spring Member Education Event here in Toronto.
On April 16, Celia will travel west again, but only to Waterloo this time, where she will give a talk on employment law to housing co‑op boards.

Iler Campbell is a ticket sponsor at the Toronto Artscape Foundation’s fundraiser, Creative TO, on May 9.
And finally, conference season will wind up with the CHF Canada AGM in London the first week of June, where Celia and Michael will both present workshops.
