Fraser’s the guy we call when things aren’t working right, we forget how to use Excel, or when we need a snazzy fake-office-chat-app website. He spent much of 2020 on paternity leave with his son Sasza.

Hi team! I’m getting started thinking about what we should do for our year end wrap-up message. So what happened this year!?

Julie
Law Clerk/Office Manager
Julie is our Office and HR Manager. There’s nothing about Iler Campbell she doesn’t know. She’s a terrific mom and grandma and she does a pretty good job of playing mother (and therapist) to us all too!
Julie Khamissa

Wow, Fraser. That's a big question!

April Cornejo
Legal Assistant

Outside of work hours, you’re most likely to find April, guitar in hand, working on learning a new song, or on an hours long hike or bike ride after which she’ll reward herself in a café or restaurant.

April Cornejo

Just looked it up! We opened 240 files and added 154 clients.

Wow. That’s a lot!

Norlinda
Law Clerk

Norlinda is Iler Campbell’s corporate law clerk. She’s a big fan of the outdoors. She grew up climbing trees and catching fish sometimes using just her bare just hands. Really! During COVID she’s found herself returning more and more to nature for the humbling, humanizing and healing feelings you just can’t get anywhere else. This year’s first snow storm she heard the sound of each snow flake falling.

Norlinda Padlan

We incorporated 11 federal non-profits and  3 Provincial Corporations (1 non-profit, 1 business corp and 1 co-op/non-profit).

Ted
Partner

Ted is a partner at Iler Campbell where he has practised law more than 20 years.  In his spare time he dreams about his Cape Breton house, where he spends every vacation.

Ted Hyland

Always a pleasure helping to bring a new organization into being!

Hunter
Law Clerk

Hunter is Iler Campbell’s litigation law clerk. Outside of the office you can often find him exploring new restaurants downtown, taking photos of his cat, in the gym or taking care of his indoor plants (yes, he describes him self as a proud plant dad).

Hunter Stone

Speaking of… my husband David and I started a small side business in February of this year. It’s a hand crafted, small batch candle business called stone essentials. It has been a cool experience to use my hobby to connect with people during the thick of COVID.

Maggie
Articling Student

Maggie is Iler Campbell’s current articling student. Outside of the office she’s a podcast aficionado (Canadaland and The Daily Zeitgeist are two favourites), big fan of snacks, and can often be found cuddling with her dog, Frank.

I’ve taught, I think, 16 webinars this year.

City Park, Canada’s largest housing co-op engaged us not once but four times(!) to deliver training in 2021. Their board got trained up on eviction law, human rights, and smoking in multi-residential buildings.  (P.S. Here’s an interesting read on City Park’s history from Spacing magazine.)

And two sessions with the board of long-time client, PARC, on their landlord obligations!

We ran free webinars on the co-op eviction process, taking the mystery out of wills, Occupational Health and Safety in the time of COVID-19 and vaccines & the workplace. (I’ve linked to videos for each of those if anyone wants to check them out.)

I’ve had a lot of great educational opportunities this year. One of them was a Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) Continuing Professional Development course about how the LTB is going to change due to COVID. It's also been great attending LTB and Human Rights seminars with Celia while she presents to our housing provider clients, both staff and directors.
Not to mention my first time appearing in front of an LTB adjudicator to represent a client (with Celia monitoring of course). Not only was that my first time in front of an adjudicator, but the order received was in the client's favour (my first “win” for a client).

  • Fraser sits on the couch with his laptop, his one year old son and two cats.
Fraser hosting a meeting with his many coworkers!
  • Michael wrote: "our neighbours came to use our pool but we are maintaining a safe distance (although our dogs are anxious to get close to them)."
  • Fraser's cat Shark. "One benefit of being home in the daytime: good natural light in which to photograph your hard to photograph pet!" he writes.
  • An (old) photo of Celia's dog Bidi the day she was born! How could we not share this!?
  • Celia's cat, Jasmine, helps with a will.
  • Celia's other pooch, Molly.
  • Celia's dog, Bidi.
  • Maggie's dog, Frank.

Here's a little collection I put together of some highlights!

I walked 2,000 km from Jan 1 to Sept 12 for PMH with the virtual support of fellow walker Tom Clement of CHFT. Tom and I had a bit of a competition going on and he smoked me – averaging 8 km/day every month in 2021!

I've been getting outside for an hour or two everyday for some 'fun'tervention! This summer I biked across town from Scarborough to Bayview using the trails of the Toronto’s valley system. Mind you I have not been on a bike since I was 10 or 11! Oh what fun! It was a true test of endurance and I felt joyfully alive.

It’s been a big year for me too.
First, it has taken quite a while to recover from the flare-up of my kidney disease that put me in the hospital in June 2020. Thankfully, the numbers are back to normal, finally, and I am feeling as full of energy as I have ever felt. Actually, wondering when old age itself will slow me down. Certainly not yet.

I have four projects that I devote a lot of my time and energy to. I am indeed fortunate that, at this late stage of my legal career, my partners have agreed to my spending less time on billable legal work, allowing me more time to pursue those projects.

I couldn’t help myself but write a little essay about these projects. Check it out:

First, TREC/Tapestry: Back in 1998, I got a call asking me to join a group to establish a new co-operative, Toronto Renewable Energy Co-operative, to develop community-owned renewable energy projects. 23 years later, I remain on its board, and am so proud of the projects it has incubated: WindShare, which erected the iconic wind turbine at Exhibition Space, SolarShare, with 51 solar PV projects throughout Ontario, over 2000 members, and more than $70 million invested, and now, Tapestry Community Capital. Tapestry, with the experience of marketing Solar bonds for SolarShare, and supporting Centre for Social Innovation‘s bond sales enabling it to purchase its two buildings in downtown Toronto, offers consulting services to Co-op’s nonprofits and charities that seek to raise money from their communities. Tapestry has just received a significant grant from CMHC to investigate alternative sources of capital for badly-needed affordable housing projects.

Circle Landtrust: Joy Connolly called me up five years ago, asking if I would be interested in joining a new initiative: a land trust to acquire 650-odd houses from Toronto Community Housing. Many meetings later, and with some incredibly effective lobbying by Joy and many others, City Council approved the transfer, for a nominal price, of 561 houses to Circle Landtrust, and the remaining houses to Neighbourhood Land Trust, based in Parkdale. This means that there is no longer any threat of these affordable homes being sold into private housing market – they will remain affordable in perpetuity. I’ve now left the board of Circle to handle the considerable legal work involved in acquiring title, and putting the financing in place to pay the purchase price and start renovating.

With many friends living on the Island, and appreciating Toronto’s waterfront as a sailor, it was easy to find myself fully engaged in the fight to stop a bridge to the Island Airport, as they said, at the time, a bridge is essential for commercial passenger service from the airport, as in the absence of a bridge, emergency vehicles could not reach the scene of a crash in sufficient numbers, or within an acceptable time period. CommunityAIR led, and won, that fight, in 2003. We at CommunityAIR have continued the fight to close the Island Airport ever since, founding NoJetsTO, which, in 2015, defeated Porter’s proposal to introduce jets to the Island Airport, and now, we have co-founded Parks Not Planes, to campaign to ensure the City’s lease of a significant portion of the Airport lands is not extended or renewed when it expires in 2033.

And, another initiative: Early in 2017, I received a phone call from Richard Carson, the owner of Hugh’s Room, my favourite live music venue, telling me he was unable to continue operating and was shutting down immediately. Could it be saved? A well-known musician and guitar maker, Grit Laskin and I decided to put together a new group to re-open Hugh’s Room as a not-for-profit (and now, registered charity). We reopened as Hugh’s Room Live in April 2017, and over the next three years presented over 600 concerts. Being in rented space, we faced daunting increases in rent, and made the hard decision to close, just as COVID closed everything anyway. This year, we assembled an amazing group of 50 or so volunteers, identified an old church on Broadview Avenue that is perfect for us, and are very close to signing the agreement to purchase it as Hugh’s Room Live’s permanent home. Just in early December, we learned that Heritage Canada is agreeable to providing funding in an amount exceeding $2 million. With that knowledge, we can feel much more confident that we will succeed in, once again, re-opening, permanently at this time, this iconic venue.
